Civil Love opening

"Now, even though the Civil War was about many things, most people assume slavery and racism was the main issue. In fact, slavery was....."

"Why am I here, listening to her drone on and on?? I mean, come on, whites are so much better, no matter what. Do blacks really think they can compete?? I mean, get real, whites are smarter..."

Both the teacher's words and my thoughts were interrupted by the final bell rang. I got up, grabbed my books, and was headed to make a quick escape when Mrs. Resker, my civics teacher, interrupted me.

"Saty, I noticed you were daydreaming in class again. What about the Civil War do you not find so interesting?? And please, be honest."

Rather begrudgingly, I dropped my books on the desk next to me, and turned around. "What I find so uninteresting," I said with every word oozing with sarcasm and scorn,"is that you were talking about how equal we all are and you and I both know how full of BS that is."

"I happen to actually believe that all people, regardless of race, age and color, are equal. We will continue this discussion on Monday."

With these final words from my teacher culminating with the warning bell for the buses, I raced to the yellow bus where I would spend the next hour before getting home. The one upside to this seemingless never-ending journey was that my best friend, Jess, lived in the apartment, sorry, condo, upstairs and therefore rode the bus. At least for now.

I barely made it to the bus and time and wormed my way to Jess' side. Our conversation revolved around her new GT convertible, the party at her place the next day and of course, school, but more importantly, schoolwork.

"Sooo, what did Mrs. Resker want this time? Any additions or just talk?" Jess asked. Jess was referring to Mrs. Resker's adding homework to whomever, whenever.

Now before I go further, let me describe Jess for you. She was your normal blond-haired, blue eyed cheerleader known for her parties and her hook-ups. She was also, unfortunately, the one I looked to for anything.

"Just talk, thankfully," I replied. "She thinks I'm too, hmm, selective, about what I like in people. Anyways, Jedi will be out of town tomorrow (Jedi referring to my mother) so I'll totally be up at your place!"

"Awesome! Yeah, Drew is gonna be there and we are totally on!"

"You mean, Jess, you're gonna do it with Drew tomorrow?! OMG!"
